Evergreen Devocean This is an intricate bronze piece. Originally I took it to a foundry to cast in bronze. I can do them myself now. This piece is first poured in several molds in wax. Each piece from the mold is fitted with wax channels called sprues. Each piece is then dipped many times in a pancake mix sort of liquid, and then rolled in several different grits of sand. After many layers, it eventually is covered with a heavy coating that looks a bit like cement. The wax is then melted out of this cement mold. Hot molten bronze is then poured into the Click to view larger image. empty space where the wax used to be. The cement sort of shell is broken off when the piece cools. Each piece is cut off of the spruing system, and the metal is finished and refined. All the pieces are soldered back together to form the original sculpture, and patinas are added for color. All this takes lots of time. Considering how bronze will stand the test of time and how much work is involved to make a piece - I figure bronze artwork is a bargain.
