This
is the third piece in a series of three so far that has a concave
spiral stomach. Comfort is sculpted in simple shapes. It was sculpted
in Styrofoam and placed in a resin bonded sand mold and poured directly
in aluminum.
She has arms that reach out for a hug and the breasts of a comforting
mother. I wanted it to be a piece that looked comforting and yet was
a bit uncomfortable. If you look at how it actually stands on the
base it cannot stand its own because it is considerably off balance.
At first glance it is comfortable to look at but a closer look shows
that it is slightly odd. I purposely made it overweight. Sometimes
we eat when we are uncomfortable or unhappy. I decided to put a cupcake
in the stomach because cupcakes are comfort food but they are not
really very nutritious. The back of the piece sports a round bottom
for added interest. The patina was done in the same layering technique
that was used on the other two pieces in the series. I used blue this
time for a color. I think of blues when I think of a mothering personality.
Mother is synonymous for comfort to me.
