The
Promise was sculpted in remembrance of 9-11. This piece is dedicated
to the children who lost their lives on the planes, the children who
lost a parent, and to the child in all of us that was forever changed
that day. The child reaching toward the angel represents the youngest
child to die that day. Christine was on a plane with her parents. She
was only 2 years old. The angel is fully sculpted. Her dress is covered
with very thin silk to give it texture. Her wings are sculpted and covered
with tiny Swarovski crystals. I sculpted the hand and the background
myself. The hand was cast in bronze. The background was cast in aluminum.
The aluminum represents the white billow of debris from the collapse
of the Towers. A torn paper collage covers the back of the piece. Information
about the children on the planes and about families who were torn apart
are scattered over the back. There are quotes and pleas and promises
there too from all over the world.
The hand represents all of us reaching out to help those in need. It
is also the hand of Christ giving us hope in eternal life for those
who lost their lives that day in an awful act of terrorism.
The kneeling angel is about 7 inches tall. The child is 4 inches tall.
The piece is about 19 inches tall by 17 inches wide by 11 inches deep.
That includes an green oval marble base that is about 11 inches long
by 8 inches wide by 2 1/4 inches thick.
