Dream Dancer

Dream Dancers live in the darkness of deep space. For centuries Scientists have tried to study them, but very little is actually known about them, since a true sighting is extremely rare. However rare, they are a well-documented scientific fact and are not a myth. Stories of sightings abound, though in actuality very few space travelers ever have the good fortune of seeing one. Scientists find that most reported sightings turn out to be fictional, but they continue to research leads.

Perhaps partly because they are rarely sighted, Dream Dancers have become the focus of many space-tales, and have been given mysterious and mystical qualities over the centuries. It is considered a very lucky omen to see one; some report it is almost a spiritual experience, and many report the experience has altered their lives. It is said your dreams come true after spotting one; hence, long ago they were given the name Dream Dancer.

Research has found that there are some surprising physical similarities between Dream Dancers and ancient mystical creatures from a distant planet known as Earth. In extremely fragile ancient records, Planetary Historians have found partial Click to enlarge. stories and pictures of creatures known as Fairies and Mermaids that lived in the forests and oceans of Earth. It has been reported that the head-globes and posterior slick-fins found on Dream Dancers are very similar to those found in ancient hand-painted pictures of Fairies and Mermaids. Scientists theorize Dream Dancers may have originally descended from these creatures, but a connection has not been proven.

Today, spotting a Dream Dancer is as rare a sight as seeing a Tri-tailed Comet, a Refracted Moonstar, or catching a Shapesifter in the act. Every deep-space traveler dreams of catching a glimpse of a Dream Dancer while traveling the Telstar Trail, believing that their fondest dreams will become reality if they do. This artist interpretation is as true a representation as scientists have documented of the fascinating creatures. Perhaps it too carries some of a Dream Dancer's magic, and will be a good omen for your deepest dreams.

Imagination and Creativity

One of the things I love about being an artist is the freedom it brings. There are no restrictions in an imaginary world. I dictate all aspects of it. I don't need unhappiness or evil if I chose not to include it. I can imagine my world in past, present, or future times.

When I decided to do a futuristic mermaid, I had the opportunity to decide not only what she would look like and what she would be laying on ... I got to create the entire world she lives in mentally. I thoroughly enjoyed the process of imagining space travelers hoping to sight a Dream Dancer. I thought about what those space ships would look like, and what they were doing traveling from place to place. I imagined far more of the story than I wrote.

Recently, I heard a quote that says, "He who is the most creative conceals his sources the best." I believe that is true. Creativity does not spring from a vacuum. It is not entirely done alone ... it springs from things other people have done. Those who seem the most creative rarely tell where they get their ideas ... making it seem as if creativity springs entirely from themselves.

Though I used my imagination and my talents to sculpt Dream Dancer, the inspiration to sculpt her came from two things that I did not create; a mermaid painting by David Delamare called Night Bath, and a trilogy I read long ago. One of the books was entitled "Dream Dancers." These creatures were more like ghosts in space rather than mermaids. I combined the mermaid painting with the story of deep space that I enjoyed so much to come up with my Dream Dancer.

I gratefully give credit to those who inspire my work. Those artists who do not are simply hurting themselves. Hiding and holding secrets are negative feelings, and eventually those qualities come out in their artwork. I love combining ideas and ending up with something special of my own that may inspire someone else.
